Abstract: The article deals with the problem of studying professional motivation of students-defectologists in the process of pastoral work. In order to change the attitude towards people with disabilities on the part of society, the state implements the “Accessible Envi-ronment” program, within which social adaptation of people with disabilities takes place. One of the areas of activity under this program presupposes training of high-quality defectological personnel capable of ensuring the highest quality training and the most effective inclusion of people with disabilities in society. At the moment, there are certain re-quirements that are imposed on higher education institutions in training defec-tologists. A defectologist is a person who is aware of the responsibility and significance of their profession; they should be motivated to perform their professional activities, be tolerant and capable of social interaction, should be considerate towards persons with disa-bilities and treat them adequately, and should contribute to the formation of a humane attitude towards them in the socio-cultural environment. In addition, the society dictates new requirements for young people reflected in the motto “You must be successful in society” instead of the notorious “You must be a useful member of society”, which is caused by the change of benchmarks in shaping the individual motivation of a person. In this case, it becomes urgent for higher education institutions, their teachers, psychologists and other specialists to create special conditions that would ensure efficient training, i.e. the formation of personality traits that would help the person to achieve success in society and to be useful to it.
